CHAPTER 14
I slowly steered my dinghy back to the dock while we carefully studied Donnyâs catamaran to see what was going on. Everything was dark. It was now into the beginning hours of Saturday morning and everything was still. They would probably move off the mooring ball in the morning.
My mind was focused. I looked at Amira. She was looking into the distance her mind was elsewhere.
I switched off the engine and coasted alongside the dock. It was dark, but there was more than enough light from the moon, and we had a flashlight and a headlamp to give us extra light if needed. I brought the dinghy up to the dock and we disembarked with effortless and unspoken teamwork. At the end of the dock was a building housing the Marina office and Sailing School. Adjacent to it was a concrete area with chairs on it as well as a cover for shade and shelter. Amira already had her phone out and was slowly pacing the dock. The phone was ringing, glowing, and outlining her head.
I didnât know whom she was calling but I had a good idea what the conversation would consist of. She was probably arranging for a detective to be on standby to visit the boats in the early morning.
Donny could leave at any time. Should we keep watch? What would we do if they tried to get away?
While I was thinking this through, we both walked toward the Sailing School. Amira was still on the phone shaking her head. Clearly no one was answering.
We got closer to the patio with the chairs. I went up to one that offered the best view of the dock. The night watchman had approached us from the main dock where the fueling station was.
âHey Bobby,â I said. He had already told me the previous week that he was named after Bob Marley â the reggae icon. From his dreads and colors â I did not doubt the story.
âEvening Mr. Sten,â he replied groggily âIs everything OK? You need anything?â
âNo, but thanks very much for asking. Weâve just left some friends on a boat and thought weâd relax here for a bit.â I talked to him away from Amira so that she could talk in private if she managed to reach anyone.
Bobby returned to his station and I sat in a chair under the cover. I was tired to the bone and was just nodding off when Amira appeared.
âI just spoke with my supervisor,â she said, âI told him everything thatâs been going on. Iâll have to go in and write this up and give a more in-depth briefing. Weâre both skeptical there will be anything on the boat connected to the murder but we have enough for an arrest warrant.
I pointed to Donnyâs boat. âIâll keep watch, Amira. Youâve had a long day. Iâll let you know if they move.â
She looked at me in the dark, her eyes and shadows giving away that she was looking at me, âNo, Sten.
